How to save money by keeping your dog healthy!

Author : teriann

I have always had a dog in my household while growing up and it was fun. Well it was fun until they got sick, then of course, we usually tried various home remedies or took them to a vet to help them get them better.

Sometimes they recovered and sometimes they didn’t but it was not because we didn’t try to help.

Costs

The truth is that the expense of taking care of a sick pet can put a heavy burden on a family’s finances.  Here in Jamaica, a visit for your pet to a veterinarian’s office can be costly. However, if your pet receives yearly check ups then this will ensure that you have given it a better chance at living longer.

Health Tips

Here are some other tips to keep your pet healthy and saving money at the vet’s office.

1. Ensure that your dog has a healthy diet. A lot of people just feed their dogs table scraps but this does not provide your dog with all the nutrients that it needs.  Be careful of giving dogs foods that are high in sugar or salt.

2. Find out the special dietary needs of your dog.  Every dog is not the same. Each breed of dog has special requirements that are necessary to give your dog a healthy long life.

3. Vet bills are expensive so keep your pet healthy and happy by making sure it gets proper exercise. Not only will this help them stay healthy, it will also help with behavioral issues you may be having with the dog. A tired dog is a happy dog.

4.  Stay Current on Shots and Pills. It is much cheaper to pay the little bit now for your pets flea, tick and heart worm prevention than it will be to pay for the vet visit later if they get Lyme disease or have heart worms. It’s moderately expensive now but worth it in the long run.

5.  Have your dog spayed or neutered. This means that your dog will not be vulnerable to aggressive attacks by other dogs at certain times of the year.

These are just my humble tips for saving money and keeping your dog healthy!

What’s your take? What do you do to save money?
