AE86 Update: Preparation for Carnival of Speed (2013)

Author : cmunroe

At Round 1 (April), the season-opener of the 2013 circuit racing season, we jumped off the deep end. I was aware of the steep climb that we had but as we say – Neva Scared! We went in recognizing that we would possibly be schooled by the seasoned campaigners. And as expected, I received the bitter rookie medicine. We were not disappointed though. The plan was to use the lessons learnt, take the advice given and improve the machine for the next event.

Our introduction to racing at Dover Raceway revealed that the machine had immediate needs, chief among which were – the differential (AE had in a ‘peg-leg’ with uncompetitive ratios), VVT-I was vital and it would not hurt our forward motion if AE was a bit lighter – add lightness!

So as soon as we returned to camp we got the ball rolling!

Doors and bonnet removed for their fiberglass appointment.

Doors and bonnet after weight loss!

The process to attach fiberglass components was a lot more arduous than we anticipated but creativity discovered clever ways to complete the task.

Colour was applied liberally.

A lighter, more sinister AE was the result (ignore the missing limb)!

We were on the correct path. Would the time sheet be sympathetic to our effort?
